Technical Information - Solar Water Heating
In principal, the technical side of solar water heating is remarkably simple; capture the sun's energy to heat water. This is easily demonstrated by placing a black polythene bags containing some water in the sun on a hot day and returning to it a couple of hours later. It will have warmed up, probably quite considerably.
In practice, it's a lot more complicated as the technology used to focus and harness the sun's energy and then convert it into hot water is evolving, employing state of the art materials to convert as much energy as possible, improving efficiency.
Today's Solar Collectors are extremely efficient. The Vacuum Tube type used by Norfolk Solar Power are capable of converting almost 80% of the energy they receives into hot water. Thinner, flat solar collectors from Grant are also used and are more aesthetically pleasing.
Additionally, Solar Water Cylinders are specialist components that look like a traditional hot water cylinder, but have dual or triple coils and additional insulation to keep the water hot for longer.
